1 John 3
How are we recognized as followers of God?
1 John 3:1 - God, through the saving grace of Christ, made us His children.
We are recognized as God's children when we live righteous lives.
1 John 3:9-10 - if we are truly God's children, we will not practice sin, because God lives in us and He cannot sin.
God does not expect we will live a perfect life, but we will not practice sin.
We will be striving to know and live God's standard for righteousness
1 John 3:13 - Don't be surprised if the world hates you.
The world does not know or recognize or respect God.
We are recognized as God's children when we love one another.
1 John 3:14 - Two ways to show we love each other as God loves
We will lay down our life for our family
When we see our family in need and rise up to help
1 John 3:18 - through action, not just word
In other words, to have compassion for one another and be prepared to sacrifice for them
- not just giving out of our abundance, but giving out of what we have for ourselves
We will not be well received all the time; our stand will be unwelcome in the world and could limit job advancement, or affect relationships.
